Fetal Infant Mortality Review (FIMR)
The goal of the Fetal Infant Mortality Review (FIMR) is to bring community members together to discuss and examine social, economic, cultural, safety and health system factors associated with fetal and infant mortality in Tarrant County.
It is expected that through these discussions, FIMR participants will help the community become expert in recommending local government policy changes and specific health interventions that will improve health outcomes for our most vulnerable citizens, and better serve families and the community as a whole.
Additional Background
Tarrant County's Fetal Infant Mortality Review program was established in 2007. FIMR is a two-tiered model with both a Case Review Team (CRT) and a Community Action Team (CAT).
The CRT has been meeting since June 2008. The CRT includes a mix of professionals and representatives of various agencies that provide services or community resources for families in Tarrant County. Each month the team examines "de-identified" findings from record reviews and interviews with families affected by infant mortality.
The infant deaths that are reviewed by the CRT are selected using a systematic random sampling method. The data from these reviews is used to develop recommendations for community action.
The CAT takes the recommendations from the CRT and refines them into actionable strategies. Our local CAT is the Health Equity Alliance of Tarrant County (formerly known as the Infant Health Network). These strategies aim to address the issues identified in case reviews.
FIMR is modeled after programs established by the National Center for Fatality Review and Prevention. More information can be found at The National Center for Fatality Review and Prevention.
