Texas Archeological Society Collection
HISTORICAL NOTE
The Texas Archeological Society was founded in 1928 under the name Texas Archaeological and Paleontological Society. The Society was formed by archeologists Cyrus Ray and E. B. Sayles after they found remnants of Native American tribes while excavating near Abilene. In order to conduct a complete exploration and scientific study of the area, Ray and Sayles asked for help from local business and professional men.
The group held regular meetings to discuss related academic papers, scientific research, local history, and the preservation of artifacts. Over time, they expanded their area of exploration and published their research. In addition to the studies done by the Society, decades of scientific archeological exploration and cultural research of the Americas shows that the Abilene area was inhabited by many Native American nations, including the Lipan Apache, Jumanos, Kickapoo, and Comanche.
The Texas Archeological Society is still active today. Members continue to promote scientific archeological research, preserve and conserve archeological materials and sites, and curate the information these sites yield.
