Worksite Lactation Support Program
Implemented October 2011
Tarrant County Public Health is proactive in the support of our employees who choose to breastfeed their infants. We are committed to implementing our family-friendly policy which is simple and inexpensive. Our worksite Lactation Support Program has four components:
1) Policy
2) Private space, non-bathroom space
3) Flexible scheduling
4) Support from experts, Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLC)
By supporting lactation at work, we expect to:
- Retain experienced employees
- Lower recruitment and training costs
- Reduce sick time taken by parents for child's illness
- Boost morale and productivity
- Reduce health-care and insurance costs

A mother is entitled to breastfeed her baby in any location in which the mother is authorized to be.

The federal law provides that employees who work for employers covered by the Fair Labor Standard Acts (FLSA) and are not exempt from section 7- which sets forth the FLSA's overtime pay requirements - are entitled to a reasonable amount of break time and a space to express milk as frequently as needed by the nursing mother, for up to one year following the birth of the employee's child.
As part of our public health strategic plan, we want to assist any business in Tarrant County to establish a Worksite Lactation Program. We can provide technical support to develop a policy, arrange a private space and trainings for employees and managers.
