Drought Information
The Tarrant County Fire Marshal’s Office monitors drought conditions using several different resources. These resources are publically available online as well. When drought conditions occur in Tarrant County, we encourage all residents to prepare their homes and property for the prevention of wildfires.
The Texas A&M Forest Service provides drought information by utilizing the Keetch-Byram Drought index (KBDI). KBDI is an index based on daily water balance used to determine forest fire potential. The index ranges from 0 to 800, with 800 representing absolutely dry conditions. The KBDI is the most widely used drought index system in the south.
The Texas A&M Forest Service also provides information on preparedness and hosts the Texas Weather Connection.
Other Drought Information Resources are provided through the National Weather Service, Fort Worth Office.
