Transfer of Kai'Yere Campbell from Tarrant County Jail

I am pleased to share that Kai'Yere Campbell, the intellectual and developmentally disabled 21-year-old, with the cognitive ability of an eight-year-old, has finally been moved out of the Tarrant County Jail.

Kai’Yere was relocated to a state supported living center (SSLC).

I am grateful to United Fort Worth and the Texas Jail Project for bringing Kai’Yere’s case to my attention so that I could assist in expediting his transfer out of Tarrant County Jail to a facility equipped to provide the appropriate care for his disability.

I have spoken to his mother, Shantel Taylor, who is relieved and grateful for the attention brought to his plight.

Kai’Yere is now in an environment in which he should have been initially and not the county jail.

When the incident occurred, the group home staff asked that he be taken to JPS Health Network for treatment. Instead, he was taken to the county jail, where he has been for six months.

While I am pleased to see he will be getting the support he needs, I am repeating my call for Tarrant County District Attorney Phil Sorrells to use the power he has, known as prosecutorial discretion, to dismiss the charges against Kai’Yere. Sorrells has used prosecutorial discretion previously. I also call on Judge Ana Hernandez to work with the District Attorney to get this case dismissed and cleared.

Then, and only then, can Kai’Yere Campbell and his family find peace while he receives the care that he needs.
