It is with a heavy heart that I extend my deepest condolences on the passing of the esteemed Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson. Her 30 years of dedicated service, representing North Texas in the United States Congress, leave an indelible mark on our community.

I have witnessed firsthand the positive impact Congresswoman Johnson had on the lives of countless individuals. I worked directly with her and her staff in my role as Arlington NAACP president, in January 2015, on a local response to the impact of Ferguson, Missouri police department’s lethal force actions that resulted in the death of Michael Brown. Her unwavering commitment to social justice and her tireless efforts to champion the rights of the underserved have left an enduring legacy that transcends political boundaries.

I am forever indebted and truly grateful for the path she carved out. I knew what was possible because she had already done it. I am here because she was there—in both houses of the Texas Legislature and then in the U.S. Congress.

I cherish the gracious congratulatory message she extended upon my election to the Precinct 2 seat on the Tarrant County Commissioners Court in November 2022.   It was especially meaningful coming from the Congresswoman because she made it possible for women across Texas to serve in seats traditionally and historically held by men.

In this difficult time for the Congresswoman’s family and our community, let us remember and celebrate the remarkable contributions Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson made to North Texas and our nation. Her memory will continue to inspire me to work towards a more just and equitable society.
