Resignation of Chief Deputy Charles Eckert: A Necessary First Step, But More Must Be Done

The resignation of Executive Chief Deputy of Confinement Charles Eckert, in charge of the Tarrant County Jail, marks a significant but necessary first step in addressing the alarming rise of jail deaths. However, systemic problems within the jail must be thoroughly addressed.

The ultimate responsibility for these issues lies with Sheriff Bill Waybourn. As Sheriff, he must lead the effort to implement meaningful reforms that ensure the safety and rights of those in custody.

Additionally, my colleagues on the Commissioners Court and I bear responsibility for this epidemic of jail deaths and the lack of proper training as county leaders.

We must work collaboratively to ensure that our facilities are safe and that our staff is adequately trained to uphold the highest standards of care and constitutional rights. 

Those who are held in jail pending a criminal charge are PRESUMED INNOCENT, a presumption guaranteed by the Constitution and one that distinguishes our nation from many others. No one should have to fear that a loved one’s arrest for a low-level nonviolent offense (or any offense) is a possible death sentence. These people are in our custody and control, and we have a legal and moral obligation to guarantee their wellbeing.

It is my hope that my colleagues on the court will join me in taking decisive actions to prevent further loss of life and restore public trust in our county’s justice system.
