Tarrant County Commissioners Court approve 20 percent property tax homestead exemption

For the second year, Tarrant County homeowners will see a reduction in their property taxes.

On Tuesday, Tarrant County Commissioners increased the homestead property tax exemption from 10 percent to 20 percent.

The Commissioners Court also approved a 20 percent homestead exemption for the Tarrant County Hospital District, bringing more tax relief to homeowners.

A taxing entity must decide before July 1 whether to offer an exemption and at what percentage. The savings would be reflected on next year’s property tax bill.

The owner of a $350,000 home with both homestead exemptions would see a reduction of $136.15 in their tax bill.

Approximately, 404,000 accounts in Tarrant County qualify for homestead exemption.

The Commissioners Court also approved a property tax exemption for properties housing childcare facilities. The new exemption came after Texas voters approved Proposition two(2) last November, which created a new property tax exemption.
